It’s shaping up to be a most cursed summer, and maybe even the most cursed of all timelines - the war(s), airline chaos, crippling strikes, a government that defecates on your head all the time, this annoying thing called inflation (can someone pls explain what it is), twigs forced to make tiktoks for £££, AI becoming sentient and whiny, the climate crisis that refuses to just *go away*, and to top it off: your last grindr hookup just told you they tested for monkeypox.

What better way to get used to our new reality than indulging in something niche internet circles have already gotten over years ago: the cursed image. A prophet before its time, the cursed image beckons truth but dares not claim it. It strikes close to home because it is at once painfully familiar and disgusting to the point of instant rejection. It is above all a viral document of a flop era that is being dismissed in the shadows of unattainable opulence, celebrity worship and technological overdevelopment. 


It is also the central theme behind Kawaii Agency's new IRL exhibition which will feature works from Ana Viktoria Dzinic, AP Nguyen, Muzi, Liv Wood, Guillermina Ricci, Molar.28, Bart Seng Wen Long and Juliusz Grabianski. The show opens on the 5th of July at Take Courage Gallery in New Cross, SE14 6TY, with a party powered by our resident roster of DJs. Who knows? Maybe this exhibition/party could just be the vibe shift we are all desperate for! jk it probs won't be, but don't let it stop you from making blessed memories together with us.

Set in the near future, the show imagines a Mars settlement established by an infamous billionaire. Viewers will experience the founder’s legacy project through the eyes of the billionaire’s son, visiting his father on the red planet for the first time. He is guided through the space by Nasubi - an ex-reality TV star now an NPC residing in the settlement. Musk4Mars was created collaboratively during weekly meetings, and reflects on themes such as accelerationist post-capitalism, techno-utopianism, nostalgia, colonialism, ethics and the thin line between utopian and dystopian thinking. The construction of this immersive exhibition space draws from found rendered objects and artworks created from projects sprouting from the cautiously utopian imperative to speculate a post-capitalist Martian settlement. It also references New Babylon, an architectural project that imagines a potential anti-capitalist city built on ludic sentiments and rhizomatic networks of linked platforms. In our reinterpretation, massive repurposed rock sculptures (by Anna Komitska) replace Constant’s smooth and functional surfaces, connected together by chrome silver stepladders, floating in space in spite of the weak gravity on Mars. Powered, financed and enabled by the billionaire’s reckless accelerationist principles, the ludic imagination here strives to interrogate itself of its complicity, while attempting to chart new potentials forward. 

Some of the main talking points discussed during our meetings include nostalgia for the mother planet, the impossible ethics of reverse-colonisation and post-scarcity lifestyle. Nostalgia and the archive is explored in Anna Komitska’s project Time Capsules, a collection of minerals naturally occurring on planet Earth that becomes gigantic sculptures, the indexical archive of humanity’s history as inextricably tied to Earth. While the scarcity of artificially synthesised oxygen implies that the use of fire must be kept to a minimum, the once indispensable driving force of humanity known as Fire is archived for future generations by Maite de Orbe in their video piece Till Fire Do Us Part. Through archival footage, they examine the varied intensities of Fire and forebode its poetic absence. Familiar relics and textures from the mother planet were algorithmically synthesised in Patrycja Dylag and Ola Sobczyk’s project Agora Peractorum. An imposing monument in the colony, it was created to soothe homesickness and immortalise the dialogic spirit of the communal. The domestic is also explored in Amy Ken Chen’s project Prayers at Dinner, a majestic dining space devoted to her ideal idol of domesticity.

Thomas Burke’s audio piece Mars Test 1 imagines the future of radio-hopping; patching together snippets of familiar pop songs, the project nevertheless points out the difference in sound perception on Mars, and serves as chief sonic ambience for the post-scarcity era. After all, one would need some pumping tunes to keep one’s muscles from shrinking in such a low gravity environment - this is where Livia Ribichini’s workout tutorial entitled Exercises Without Gravity proves useful. And yet, exercise is not the only activity considered vital in the colony - failure to keep Martian soil fertile would mean dire consequences for the settlers. As a reminder, Kayla Lui’s The Sanctuary adorns the space, impelling residents to contribute their life-giving urine. Peace and soil fertilisation are enforced by Alice Bajaj’s Robotters. An unfortunate inheritance from the mother planet, law enforcement could at least pretend to be adorable in these less-trying times. A good question remains however: to what extent must freedom be policed, even in post-capitalist Utopia where jealousy and competition counts for nought? All these ideas are introduced within the space by Bart Seng Wen Long and Juliusz Grabianski’s fictional character, Nasubi, master story-teller of gen-Z ilk and chief mascot of a brave new age on Mars.</description>

In December 2021, we hosted a launch party in Avalon Cafe, London, for our pavillion which was hosted on the 5th edition of The Wrong Biennale. Over 150 people came to celebrate with us and we put on a selection of our favourite local DJs. All photos by Aaliyah Jackson.

In December 2021, we were invited by Arebyte on Screen to collaborate on their browser plug-in exhibition. Viewers would download an extension for their internet browser, which we then programmed to create pop-up windows at specific times of the day. Using this unique opportunity, we could not help but spammed them with cute content from across the internet 5 times a day for a whole week.

Kawaii Agency is a digital exhibition held as part of the Wrong Biennale. The virtual show centres around the manifold ideas of cuteness found thriving within contemporary culture. It brings together brand new projects by fourteen emerging artists, exploring what cuteness, as an aesthetic or a thematic concern or an existential condition, might mean to them.

It is our suspicion that the cute has already pervaded our world completely: it beckons from bright OLED screens holding in low-res anime renders, cosy pink polyester fur mass produced by dodgy factories in the global South, and dainty porcelain artefacts that hint at the aesthetic and material lineage of cuteness. To no one’s surprise, the cute remains ultimately a consistent market success, and is best known today for lending its aesthetic prowess to the project of commodification. Furthermore, in our attention economy, it also determines pleasure-affirming algorithms and dopamine-fulfilment routines. At the same time, as Sianne Ngai would put it, it implores for your tender protection but it also suggests a vulnerability which incites sadism. The cute is ultimately to be consumed, even when it can quickly go from sweet to disgusting through a change of mood. And yet, this power dynamic we might have with the cute, it often oscillates in unexpected or unrepresentable ways - a slight peek beneath the cute’s surface might reveal a stupendous mechanism, its far-reaching tentacles (not unlike those in hentai sub-genres) wrapped around every part of postmodern society.


Perhaps that is the evolutionary legacy of cuteness; the sight of young animals triggers dopamine release and helps ensure protection by their caretakers. In fact, some animals deliberately delay or slow down their physiological development to maintain that baseline - case in point, modern humans. In an online economy like that of TikTok or Seeking Arrangement, cuteness becomes a tool in one’s arsenal of self-expression used in a capitalist agenda of appealing for transactional care. And yet, it is surely unfair to paint the cute simply as connivance when it still brims with potential for the sincere. Perhaps all it takes is to wade past the sickly saccharine veneer and truly love it despite being witness to all its potentials of being twisted.


These are all themes that not only inform, but also overlap and converse throughout the artworks produced by Kawaii Agency’s roster of artists. A consistent theme is the diverse contemporary takes on femininity as observed through the cute. We find it in Maddy Plimmer’s Objects and Affair, an interactive dollhouse with its assemblage of adorable furniture - a hands-on exploration of cuteness’ enduring ties with the representation of the feminine and the domestic. This might find kindred connection to Peggy Huang’s Too Cute to be True, a fictional music album whose first track About Dizziness transports the audience into a private musical soulscape where different animated manifestations of herself converge in a meditative seance. Meanwhile, in the respective works of Salome Czapiewski and Jody Evans, the feminine may opt to employ cuteness in more provocative expressions of sexuality. Salome’s visual/text piece Erokawa considers intimately the Japanese lacuna that describes a particularly contemporary eroticism that hinges on cultural perception of cuteness. Jody’s The contents of my bedside table takes an almost typological look at the artist’s own collection of sex toys and the contradiction between aesthetics and intended function. As a timely reminder that sexual cuteness can still demand a heavy price from the women who are seen as walking avatars of adorability, Megumi Ohata’s Kawaii is Justice is a multimedia artwork originating from a traumatic memory, which then finds visceral expression through the joint mediation of cutting edge analogue SFX processes and digital techniques. The line separating cuteness and aggression is also carefully traced in Jan Berger’s The Most Infamous Elf in the History of Cyrodiil, a portrait study of a particular ‘fan favourite’ character from cult video game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. We later revisit the space between power and vulnerability in Joseph Losper’s videographic poem Akachan, which guides us through a personal memory of cuteness in the artist’s early relationship with his partner. The speed of seduction accelerates in Aaliyah Jackson’s glitchy video installation i_kiss_your_lips which weaves nightcore music and online makeup tutorials together into a hyper-feminine data collage. Using this momentum, we tumble into a psychedelic spiral down the rabbit hole of cuteness’s cultural implications on blackness and femininity in Shane Sutherland’s CUTE, BLACK QUANTUM FUTURE. Leaping through the looking glass, we appear back in modern-day Britain, where Vince Ibay’s project Hugo’s Antiques reflects on class and race relations by reappropriating influencer trends from internet niches such as ToryTok, Asian TikTok and PinoyTok. As we keep scrolling, we can feel the power of cuteness radiating uncomfortably from Bart Seng Wen Long’s video project 44 Minutes, Compressed into a Whole Life, which pits the subversion of masculinity in online catboy culture with the transactional, affective labour of the fetish through an endurance test carried out on a femboy icon. And still glued to the screens of our mobile devices, we watch the deconstruction of algorithmic understanding of cuteness in Anna Komitska’s and Juliusz Grabianski’s projects. In INTRODUCTION 35 ~&#38;gt;tivism, Anna investigates the language of cuteness by training an AI to retell Sienne Ngai’s analysis of the cute. Juliusz, on the other hand, aims to achieve cuteness in its purest form by training an AI to generate statistically cute imagery in his project Synthesising Cuteness. The show is hosted by Misha Notley’s avatar tour guides, taken from her video Love in a Sailor Suit. The anime models appear in a number of 21st century scenarios exploring game aesthetics, world building techniques and a postmodern representation of gender.
