Megumi Ohata is a Japanese, non-binary artist based in London, United Kingdom, currently studying their MA at the Royal College of Art. Ohata has been producing sculpture, moving image and wearable art using SFX techniques to challenge societal norms and expectations by emulating human bodies.
The ideas of gender/identity politics as a non-binary gender with having a sense of discomfort towards their own body, difficulties that they experienced living as a person-of-colour and a traumatic past of having an abusive mother have been influencing Ohata's whole practice. They aim to capture disturbing and bizarre visualisations through their fascination with the body whilst responding to absurd and baffling human habits. Ohata has always been curious about how our minds, beliefs, attitudes and emotions are shaping our bodies, and contrastingly, how our mentality and physicality are impacting the body itself.
