Description of project

Objects and Affairs as a part of Kawaii Agency, presents a virtual dollhouse for the viewer to decorate. This work considers Sianne Ngai’s (2012) writing on cuteness in Our Aesthetic Categories: Zany, Cute, Interesting, which ties cuteness to commodification, femininity and the domestic. The dollhouse and its digital contents reflect an assemblage of affects that surround a presumed feminine body. The domestic frame of the dollhouse also invokes the aspirational, providing a place for play within something perhaps otherwise unattainable. Cuteness is joyful in its submission, and playful in its consumerism, and always protected by its vulnerability.
