Joseph Losper - He/Him

Artist Bio

Educated at UAL Chelsea College of Arts, Joseph Losper is a multidisciplinary artist of dual culture, exploring the relationship between commerce and ‘high art.’ Juxtaposing elements of pop culture and motifs from art history’s canon, creating work inhabiting the space between ‘art’ and ‘merch,’ much of Losper’s work features the recurring character of Akachan.
A god-like being born of personal experience and interest in the 'icon.’

Description of project

Born of an early interaction with my boyfriend, 'Akachan' has come to represent the cuteness that exists in the space between the power and vulnerability of our early relationship. When we met, neither of us spoke much of the other’s language, leading to many awkward interactions. The distance between the power of understanding a language and the vulnerability of not is personified and commodified in the visage of the Kewpie mascot. A commercial representation of cuteness designed to sell Japanese mayonnaise. This project is an introspective look at the birthplace of my fascination with cuteness.
