Bart Seng Wen Long - He / Him

Artist Bio

Born and bred in Singapore, Bart (he/him) is currently based in London.

His practice spans across the photographic, the moving image, literary nonfiction and performance. Drawing from uncanny scenes of contemporary culture, his work places a playful focus on the discordant elements that plague queer countercultural desires and fantasies emerging in a metropolitan techno-capitalist epoch. With anything he make, his hope is always to synthesise and subvert the schizophrenic sensibilities of our times through conceptual interrogations and sincere satires, with equal parts humour and poetry; so as to reveal unexpected modes of feeling and being, desiring and labouring.

Description of project

‘44 minutes, compressed into a lifetime’ draws from a durational performance conducted between Bart and femboy icon Luigi, where the latter danced for a total of 44 minutes as part of an endurance test, to a trendy TikTok choreography emblematic of TikTok-ers’ obsession with the subversion of masculinity found within anime subculture. The video of this durational piece is remixed temporally and interspersed with an archive of found TikTok videos featuring the femboy community, many of whom are young western boys. The endurance aspect of the piece also questions the taut balance between fetishistic fantasy and fallible humanness usually left tacit in the affective labour dynamic femboys negotiate with when embodying the role.
